Welcome to the Heart of Jesus Catholic Books and Studies. Even if you have never studied the Bible before, our prayer for you is that you will find reflection on Scripture as exciting, encouraging, and strengthening to your faith, as we have experienced in studying and leading Scripture studies for over 30 years.
The purpose of the books are to help individuals encounter Jesus Christ in Scripture, develop a deeper relationship with Him and fall in love with God and His Word. It is our hope that all hearts will be set on fire as Jesus opens the Scriptures to them just as He did with the disciples on the Road to Emmaus (Luke 24:13-35).
The Catholic Church encourages the prayerful study and reflection on Holy Scripture by all the faithful:
“Assess to sacred Scripture should be provided for all the Christian faithful” and “all the Christian faithful” should “learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus Christ’ (Phil. 3: 8) by frequent reading of the divine Scriptures... (As St. Ambrose wrote) ‘Prayer should accompany the reading of sacred Scripture so a dialogue takes place between God and man. For, we speak to Him when we pray; we hear Him when we read the divine oracles [Scriptures]" (Dei Verbum, Sec. 22 & 25).
All studies have a Nihil Obstat from the Censor Librorum and an Imprimatur from the Archbishop of Omaha so that you can be assured the studies are free of doctrinal or moral error.
The Heart of Jesus Study Guides are written in a format that follows the advise of St. Augustine for studying Scripture:
· Read Scripture in its historical and cultural context;
· Apply basic truths and precepts to daily living;
· Study the meaning of words in the original language of Scripture;
· Include commentary that summarizes the key points; and
· Reflect on the key passages.
Guided questions are provided to help readers focus on hearing God speak to the hearts in a personal way.
The books combine Scripture reflections with guided questions, commentary, historical notes, Scripturally-grounded prayer, and personal application.
The Books are meant for individual study and reflection. They also have been successfully tested and used in many venues, such as
· Parish prayer groups (e.g., the Heart of Jesus Prayer Group™)
· Parish Bible studies,
· RCIA programs,
· High school religion classes, or
· Family home study.
